What is auto enrolment? 

Auto enrolment is part of workplace pension reform, which is being introduced to give all employees the opportunity to contribute to a pension scheme.

As an employer you must inform all employees about the pension scheme as well as automatically enrol qualifying employees and contribute towards their pension. Eligible jobholders can choose to opt out of the pension scheme though you must not encourage them to do this. You must also tell other non-qualifying workers about the scheme so that they can choose to opt-in.

Why is auto enrolment being introduced?

People are living longer, with healthier lifestyles; as a result the ratio between the workforce and those at a pensionable age is decreasing. People are also planning and saving less for their retirement. The current state pension cannot sustain this change so as a result, workers are being encouraged to save for their retirement through workplace pension schemes.

When does auto enrolment begin?

Auto enrolment started on 1st April 2012 and is being rolled out in stages, starting with the largest companies.

Each employer will be given a date from which the changes will have to be in place (your Staging Date). The Pensions Regulator will write to you with your staging date and you can also check on The Pensions Regulator website.
